Creating our first music video - 'Where are U now?'

Here is the music video for the song 'where are U now' by Justin Beiber and Skrillex;

Here is our replication;

After deciding on replicating this video, we began to plan the production process. At least some of it had to take place during arts evening, in front of parents. We decided the sketches drawn onto the individual frames of the video would be ideal as visitors could take part. In preparation for this we needed to film footage with a green screen background and then split into groups to edit the video (on final cut pro) ready to be put together for the evening.

Filming
For the filming part we acquired a green screen and place Rob, our actor, in front of it. We then shot the various shots of him lip synching including multiple close-ups, mid-shots and long-shots. We shot each shot more than once, ensuring a higher quality end product as we can pick the very best of the multiple shots. We shot in 4K as it allowed us to change the frame rate without have a very negative effect on the quality of the video. We also filmed the time-lapse on a tripod during arts evening.

Arts evening
We numbered and printed each frame of the video, 4 frames to an A4. We arranged a work station and put out the sheets of paper. As parents and students began to arrive we sat down and begin to draw anything an everything onto the screenshots, welcoming them to join us and do the same. After a sheet was finished, we piled them into a tray ready to be sorted back into chronological order at a later date. During this process we filmed the time lapse used in the finished product.

What went well
The time lapse worked very effectively. So did the application of drawings onto the frames of Rob, we managed to retain relative clarity and the images flowed quite well without jumping around the screen too much, something that could have happened if not cropped or scanned precisely. We lip synced very effectively by playing the music as we filmed.

What could be better
We didn't include a few sections of animation which the original had. I did not particularly like these animations but to replicate the video better we would have to include them, potentially created on adobe illustrator. Another effect we missed was the 'melting away' of Rob/Beiber at the end of the video.
